Significant, as world renowned Navajo artist and fellow Taoseño, R.C. Gorman, traditionally had a show on this date. Rory was a protégé of R.C’s who he met in Taos in the 1970’s and became life-long friends with. In 1991 Gorman commissioned Wagner to paint “Aunt Mary” for his personal collection.

As committed to his art as his mentor, Rory was known to destroy a canvas if it did not satisfy his intense scrutiny and standards. Often labeled as an eccentric and a recluse, particularly in the last decade of his life when he suffered from poor health, he withdrew from the social scene he once enjoyed. “He just holed up in his studio and would paint.” (Nightingale)

Uncompromising in his work he produced between six and twelve canvases a year. Each canvas was said to “glow” with Rory’s passion and his unique style.

As a self-taught painter he was drawn to the works of the Dutch master of portraiture Vermeer whose style Rory captured but made his own: painting rich, realistically rendered figures. The countless hours he spent researching the smallest details, his meticulous attention to these details, the authenticity of the glint in the eyes, the tiniest detail in the clothing and beadwork, the care he took in building each image – each vital in its own place in order to produce the intense, historically correct images that hold our gaze, our almost disbelief that it is a painting and not a photograph.
This level of perfection is unquestionably why Rory’s works are in public, private and corporate collections all over the world.

Rory Wagner is missed by all who knew him and he has left a void in the art world but his art will continue to intrigue and to entertain today and for all time,” reflects Rob Nightingale.

Remembering Rory… A retrospective of the works of award winning artist Rory Wagner is open to the public August 1 – September 30th, 2011 and will feature the remaining seven of Rory Wagner’s final works complemented by fine art prints of some of his earlier works.

For more information contact:

Rob Nightingale
575-758-3255
info@wnightingale.com
www.wnightingale.com

Grand Bohemian Gallery at El Monte Sagrado Resort
575-737-9840
www.elmontesagrado.com.

Rare Carlos Hall and Rory Wagner Retrospective

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 317px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Yagjq_VpELg/ThIObKG6p4I/AAAAAAAAAFo/P_oE-1iCFHo/s320/Carlos%2BHall%2BTaos%2BRider.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5625574744271792002" />

Just arrived in the gallery, this rare original oil by Carlos Hall ( 1928- 1997 ). Rob Nightingale feels when on thinks about "the Light" of Taos, many think of the vibrant sunsets, verdent valleys and sage colored mesas. Of his exuberance with color, one of his peers said that “Carlos could find color under a stone.”

Anyone familiar with Halls artwork knows that his pieces are linked to his strong New Mexico heritage. He was raised in the eastern New Mexico border town of Clovis by his great aunt, Nelle, and great uncle, Charles Scheurich. Through this uncle, Hall is descended from both Charles Bent, the first Civil Governor of the New Mexico territory, and to Kit Carson. In fact, Carson died in the arms of Scheurichs father, and Hall possesses the last correspondence of Carson. Halls great grandfather was a cowboy during the great cattle drives of the 1870s. From his great aunt and uncle, whose family home was in Taos, Hall learned the language, chants and dances of the Taos Pueblo Indians.

Beginning at a young age, Hall associated with the painters known as The Taos Founders, and inspired by their work, began taking painting lessons from age nine. However in his early adult life, he took a turn away from his artistic interests. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute and finished college at Eastern New Mexico University. Then he served as an army officer, worked for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, operated a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico, and co-owned an art gallery in Santa Fe.

In 1965, he determined to work full time as an artist, and he and his wife, Sandy, moved to the Taos area where they lived in an adobe home on a mesa overlooking Taos Pueblo owned land. For many years, he has been regarded as a professional artist, and his work is so generally popular that not only is he widely collected, but his poster designs were the program covers for the Scottsdale Jazz Festival in 1992 and recently for the Taos telephone directory.

Hall is particularly fascinated by the blanketed Taos Pueblo Indians. According to a Southwest Art magazine feature article, December 1986: “The folds of their blankets became a magnet that attracted Hall to the patterns that he found repeated in the mountains surrounding the valley. It would become a motif that would continue in his art, even to the present day.” These motifs of dazzling color and design appear in his landscapes of the nearby Rio Grande Valley and those of places further away in western New Mexico and Arizona.

Courtesy of Taos Gallery Scottsdale

"Aunt Mary" by Rory Wagner, 1991, Acrylic on Canvas, 64 x 58, $ 50.000.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 182px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-AHMYmRj66I/TTOBPt5ZKfI/AAAAAAAAAEE/ykPSQqYBmbE/s200/Aunt%2BMary.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562932071751035378" />
From the Collection of RC Gorman ( 1931-2005). In addition to a clean bed and the opportunity to shower and do laundry, we serve home cooked dinners which are brought to the Shelter every evening by various members of the community. Our staff gets to know each of the men, who stay with us for more than a night or two, and staff can provide counsel, and will put the men in contact with any agency that may be of assistance. The important thing in these communications, aside from the possible results, is the mutual respect and caring that becomes part of the Shelter’s environment. Under our current operating budget, it is costing us a little over $25 per night to provide these services for each man.

In addition to helping the men, the Shelter provides important community services. We are a resource for the police department, churches and mental health agencies all of which encounter men who have no where else to go. Not only is our Shelter the most humane and effective solution, it can save public funding by avoid the public expenses of incarceration and emergency room care, which are much more expensive than our costs.

The Taos Men's Shelter takes a Housing First approach to addressing chronic homelessness. Studies have shown that it is less expensive to pay rent for the chronically homeless than it is for them to live from street to shelter. More importantly, in many cases, it works in the long run to end the homelessness by allowing the man to develop the necessary tools to take more responsibility and control of their lives. Therefore, TCEH is teaming up with The Life Link in Santa Fe, which has the rent vouchers and the staff, who can help appropriately match the man to the rental unit and remain in contact on a regular basis during the critical early months of the tenancy to address any problems that may arise. We are very excited about the prospects for success using the Housing First approach, and we look forward to our first winter in our new Shelter

Caffe Tazza: The Quality of the Conversation by Robbie Steinbach

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-AHMYmRj66I/TNW7XCqdxyI/AAAAAAAAADo/6wOYmoye51s/s200/Sambhu.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536537321448261410" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-AHMYmRj66I/TNW63_iWepI/AAAAAAAAADg/5slHxskLQg0/s200/Pythagoras+and+Kiva.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536536788032977554" />
Wilder Nightingale Fine Art and Cafe Tazza present

"Cafe Tazza: The Quality of the Conversation"
Photographic Portraits by Robbie Steinbach.
Dual Receptions, Saturday, November 13 from 5-7 pm.
Show runs to November 29th
This event is free/ no charge and open to the public

Of all the great coffee shops in Taos, New Mexico, why Caffe Tazza? Sambhu, a local musician and artist who has been coming to the café since its founding twenty-six years ago, says it‘s “the quality of the conversation.” It’s true that the impromptu discussions are wide-ranging, intelligent, sometimes contentious, occasionally incomprehensible – but always fascinating. When I moved to Taos in 2001, I took a part-time job at Tazza while waiting for my teaching job to begin. As I stood behind the counter, preparing coffee and listening in, I thought, “I am definitely not in Bettendorf, Iowa, any more!” The regular participants then included not only Sambhu, but Caress the poet from London who dressed in sorcerer’s garb, Jesus a sweet bear of a man who played saxophone and flute, Willow the Tarot Card reader who had previously been known as Leaf, and brilliant local artist Anita Rodriguez, who sparked some of the most challenging dialogue. I loved it.

Over nine years later, having made a home in Taos and having worked here as professor and gallerist and artist, I found myself drawn once again to Caffe Tazza. This time to hang around on the patio talking to people, listening to music, and making photographic portraits. Why Tazza? Not only because it was just plain fun and the lattes were good, but because I needed an antidote to the increasing homogeneity of American culture.

We’re lucky in Taos – we have no Starbuck’s, and we have an often controversial but never dull mix of cultures. But Caffe Tazza in particular attracts individualistic free spirits, both locals and pilgrims traveling through. In the past few months, I’ve met many young people who are on the road – they’ve said that locals told them Tazza was a welcoming place. They loiter on the patio, exchanging stories, playing chess, strumming guitars and singing. They share knowledge of where they might find a free meal or a place to sleep. Then they continue on their seeking journeys.
Owner Mark Hoffman, who bought the coffee shop two years ago, is very aware of the history and the community of Caffe Tazza. Mark had been regularly attending literary events at the café, where the poetry slam movement was allegedly born. When it came up for sale, he made the decision to not let this tradition die. In addition to coffee and conversation, he offers poetry parties, chess matches, and music events. The roots of the building itself go back far – it was built in the 1830’s, and the rear part was once Kit Carson’s horse stable.

At Tazza, the locals connect with their community in Taos. Sambhu says that he uses his hour or two in the café every morning as his “office hours – people know where to find me, and don’t come to my house and bug me.” He wants to talk to people face-to-face, not over WiFi, and considers his routine there his center of gravity. Customers from the West Mesa and Tres Piedras share permaculture and earthship building tips. Nearby apartment-dwellers and gallery owners stop in for coffee. Tourists drop by, intrigued and sometimes bemused.

As a part of the reinvention that they have embraced, many of my portrait subjects have given themselves new names. Sambhu’s name was given to him by a yogi in England, whom he calls a self-realized person. Sam and bhu mean absolute and relative, representing at once both sides. And there are Pythagoras, Sparrow, Tall Blond Guy, Sunkmanito Ho Waste Hokshila, Whitebeard, Agent H. Solo, etc.

The stories are as rich as the names. Cindy, a belly dancer and one of the women regularly inhabiting Caffe Tazza, proudly tells of giving birth to her children. The first two births were attended by friends - but for the last birth she was alone in a hundred-year-old cabin in Taos Canyon, and “caught him herself.” Tall Blond Guy relates the satisfaction of building his own home on the West Mesa for a few thousand dollars, though he expresses concern about safety issues in his community. But, he says, “If we wanted generic, we’d live generic. Flavor, like spice in food, is what people want.” He hitched a ride to Taos with a former director of the Hanuman temple, after his years of following the Grateful Dead band ended with the death of Jerry Garcia. He had first learned of Taos from the film Easy Rider, and wanted to “check out all the hippies living out there.” He says the ghost of Dennis Hopper is still here in Taos.

One of the long-timers is Frank, who came to Taos in 1971, thirty-nine years ago. He too mentions the Grateful Dead, quoting from the song, Truckin’: “What a long strange trip it’s been.” He lived in Llano Quemado when he first arrived, and thought he had arrived from California into Old Mexico. There were few paved roads, and only the privileged had electricity and television. He lived by the hot springs, bathed in them every morning, fed the bears at night. Since he had come with carpenter tools and skills, he soon entered “the hierarchy of those who had at least $10 in their pockets.” House rent was $25 a month, so he learned that he didn’t have to work as hard as he had thought, and kicked back. After working security in local bars and buying and selling small parcels of land over the years, he retired to Tres Piedras. He hitches rides into town (he used to ride a horse, but says he was banned from the plaza because he didn’t clean up after his horse). He considers Caffe Tazza his family hub. He says it’s like Cheers, Taos style!

Frank, now sixty-one years old, thinks back to the days when the Mountain Rats, a motorcycle gang existed – not violent, he says, just your neighbor. He reminisces delightedly about “crazy” people who used to walk freely around town: “We used to like that. Old ladies talking to spirits in the sky. An ex-sheriff, 90 years old, still with his badge on, cowboy hat like McCloud, gun in his belt – but they took the bullets away.” Frank fears that Taos is changing so much that it may be a mini-Santa Fe by the year 2020. But perhaps not: “Taos is a sovereign nation. We don’t really abide by everybody else’s rules.”

A much newer arrival is Sparrow. She arrived six years ago, attracted by affordable land, an interest in permaculture, and open rules for home-schooling her children. Like many inhabitants of Taos, she works several jobs. She stuccoes homes, raises goats and ducks (no chickens, “they are an alien half-breed or something”), works at Caffe Tazza, and lovingly tends her growing family.

John the Poet started writing seriously when he moved to Taos. He had worked in construction until he was injured on the job, and was visiting Taos when a tree fell on his home in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. There was nothing to go back to, so he stayed. He spends much of his day in the café, writing poems in longhand and penning political pieces.. He chose Tazza for his literary hangout because he likes the architecture, the open mike event on Friday evenings, and the “eccentric characters.” Diversity is always what he’s been looking for.

Strumming his guitar with Buddha‘s sayings handwritten all over it, Timothy sits on the outdoors patio. He creates art: music, oil paintings, jewelry, twenty-five styles of walking sticks, and dreamcatchers. He never sells his creations, but prefers to barter – last winter he traded jewelry for a small wood-burning stone.

Many of the regulars at Caffe Tazza don’t lead easy lives. But most of them wouldn’t have it any other way. Sambhu, who has worked hard but artfully as a waiter for many years, believes that “without struggle, you’re not really alive.” And Tall Blond Guy says, “That’s what your life is for, isn’t it? To really live it, the good and the bad. If you go to a nursing home and ask the people there, they’ll say, Live your life.”

Caffe Tazza, the second-oldest coffeehouse in New Mexico, brims with life. Sambhu says that he has kept coming to Tazza, through the all the years and various owners, because “I’m kind of a cat. It’s hard for a cat to lose its place.” And for a man to whom “the original sin is ugliness,” the beauties of Taos and its people constitute saving grace.

Caress, the poet I met during my first months in Taos, wrote: "Creation is that delicious eloquence that lies within paradox." That seems to reflect life at Caffe Tazza: creative, disordered, delicious, tolerant, obstreperous, nurturing, durable, paradoxical, unique.

Robbie Steinbach 2010

Pattie Traynor presents "Ethereal Beauty"

Wilder Nightingale Fine Art presents Pattie Traynor as its artist of the week.

Traynor is happy to share with the public her new works in a show entitled :

"Ethereal Beauty"
October 23-October 30
Meet the artist on Saturday, October 23 from 5-7 pm
Wilder Nightingale Fine Art
119 Kit Carson Road
Taos, NM 87571
Open to the public/ No Charge

For this exhibition Pattie states,
"I have always been drawn toward images, which reflect what, appears to me as Sacred. I have gained an academic background that has given me the freedom that I now have to go beyond technique. I love the visual beauty of New Mexico, the desert and the richness and variety of the 3 cultures. I consider myself a contemporary colorist and a New Mexico Modernist, but most of all, a visual poet. I am drawn to paint endangered places, in the hope to draw public awareness to them, to help to save them, and to try to preserve them and draw attention to them by capturing them on canvas.

New works by Taos artist BJ Briner

<img style="float:right;
“Photographers of Nightingale”

March 13 through April 13.

The artists, Robbie Steinbach, Cris Pulos, Pattie Traynor, Doug Yeager and Steve Immel, all have different viewpoints on what is sacred to them and this show reflects that.

After meeting with the artists here are their thoughts.

Robbie Steinbach is inspired by a poem her friend

Rebecca Wee wrote,

the second time we met he told me about the hoop snake

seductive, exquisite, a godless man, so I listened

we weren’t sure though if it could be true –

a snake that takes its tail in its mouth, then rolls through the world

but there are reasons to believe in god and this seems a good one…

we are after something miraculous. we open our mouths, we believe,

we turn at times. we gather speed.

Steinbach finishes with, “Through my art, I seek what is sacred to me: beauty, ambiguity, mystery, shadow and light, the feminine, the ephemeral, the miraculous.”

Cris Pulos states,

"Trying to explain the sacred is like attempting to rationalize the
meaning of life. I do not think it is understandable by the mind but
is approachable from the heart and senses. Photographic images are
'captured' with these other gifts. All is sacred and we forget by
covering our lives with self-imposed veils. Using a camera helps me to
remember."

Pattie Traynor commented that most of her work comes from a place where she feels blessed. “I feel blessed that I am able to travel and experience different cultures, ceremonies, smells, tastes and the power of people when they have little food, difficult living conditions and are still content. I see the sacred in nature, the love a parent has for their child and when I see a man covered in eagle feathers dancing on the land of the Taos Pueblo. I have come to realize that my photographs, when seen by others, is a way for my life to be witnessed.”

Doug Yeager, who has been honored to receive accolades in the past couple of years at the Taos Fall Arts Open, has always felt nature is sacred.

“I love to photograph oak trees, flowers, fields and reflections in windows. When I take photos of these things I feel a connection to the past, to things that have been lost and forgotten. I am attracted to trees that have lost their leaves, a barren field, an abandon adobe dwelling.” Yeager loves old photographs and has been collecting them his entire life. In his printing process he has tried to capture the essence of an old photograph. When printing in sepia tone and diffusing his images, his goal is to capture the feeling of those old photographs of our past the past.

In conclusion, Steve Immel feels that what is sacred exists in the eye or mind of the beholder. “Indeed, sacredness is to be found in all the earth’s beings and in the grandeur of Mother Earth itself. The existence or nature of a higher power lies in this personal realm, as well. The photographs I have selected are either directly spiritual through obvious religious iconography or because they evoked an emotional or spiritual response in me at some point in the creative journey whether at the point of capture, during processing or much later upon reflection.” The images Immel has selected for the show are eclectic for he feels they pass some kind of internal test and are not necessarily connected by theme, content or style.

Welcome to Taos

Wilder Nightingale Fine Art in Taos has been and continues to assist new and seasoned art collectors acquire original art for over 18 years.
